Theodora Jonsson works from direct connection with the land. “Exploring the geology of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia coastline, by foot and by boat, have shaped me. I use a personal vocabulary developed through years of drawing and painting from study and observation reside in my bones.” The converging of space and light between highest peaks and the deepest fjords expresses a feeling of fragility and balance on the thin, human plane we occupy. Asking, what does it mean to be human? Sometimes I frame the question as a dialogue between the human and animal.

Her personal vocabulary evolved observing shapes transformed through moving water, rock and ice. The mediums I work in include handmade paint and pigments gathered from the landscape, printmaking, glass casting and etching. The material process of transformation due to heat, cooling and tension interests me, speaking of eons of evolution and the climate changes affecting us today. The changing effects of ice and water on our delicate ecosystems intertwine and are seen in the process of cast, slumped and painted glass.

Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Northwest Art, The Whatcom Art Museum, Pilchuck Glass School, Cygnus Gallery, Perry Carlson Gallery, Smith and Vallee Gallery, the University of Washington, The National Liberty Museum, Philadelphia, OMAI International Exhibition, Mendoza, Argentina, Studio One International Art Festival in Kinsale Ireland, Wellington International Arts Festival, Arte Contemporanea in Rome Italy, and the International Sculpture Exhibition in Munster Germany.
